Press Release – Tuesday 31 October 2023

The fundraising campaign of the 2023 Sofi Malt Great Ethiopian Run International 10km has already raised more than 1.7 million birr, race organisers have announced, and is on target to reach its 2 million birr goal before the day of the race on Sunday 19th November 2023.

Announcing the success of this year’s campaign, Abderazak Alawi, the Charity and Mobilization Officer at Great Ethiopian Run, said that this year’s campaign had been built around attracting donations both from local and international donors. “Our GivenGain online platform has made it easier to attract donations from outside Ethiopia, and we have continued to receive fantastic support from individuals locally and from organizations in Addis Ababa.”

Funds have also been collected from last-minute t-shirt sales sold at a premium with proceeds given to charity and from sales of a photobiography of Haile Gebrselassie.

One group of fundraisers called “Run For Life” set a 100 Day Challenge leading up to the race on 19 November to do any type of daily exercise with the aim of raising collectively 100,000 ETB from their 40 group participants.

This year a specially designed medal will be awarded to the top 50 fundraisers who are also participating in the race who each raise a minimum of 27,500 ETB. This is the equivalent amount to support one beneficiary of the REBUILD HER BUSINESS campaign to which the funds are being given.

Reflecting on the commitment of so many participants to run for this cause, Alawi said: “raising money to help rebuild a family’s means of an income can be so uplifting and will have far-reaching effects for the whole community.”
