Press Release – Tuesday 24 October 2023

In line with its truly international appeal, the 2023 Sofi Malt Great Ethiopian Run International 10km looks set to break all records for participation from ambassadors and embassy staff resident in Addis Ababa. Already registration has come from more than 20  different foreign embassies and more are likely in the coming weeks.

Alongside the interest from embassies in Addis Ababa – of which there are more than one hundred in Ethiopia’s capital – the run is also generating interest outside Ethiopia after the Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent messages to many Ethiopian missions in Africa, North America and Europe with news about the run.

In London, the Ethiopian Community will be staging a “Virtual Run” on the same day as the run in Addis Ababa with around 200 members of the Ethiopian Community expected to take part.

Hilina Negussie, Marketing Director of Great Ethiopian Run, says that the international interest in the run comes both from the publicity generated by the event in Addis Ababa and the participation from a diverse range of runners across the world. “It’s a truly unique road race. Like all road races, we have a strong elite field. But it’s the carnival atmosphere and the uplifting spirit generated by the participants which really makes this run special.”

To date more than 150 participants from outside Ethiopia have registered for the run which takes place on Sunday 19th November 2023.

As in previous years, the elite fields will also comprise runners from Kenya and Uganda, with the run serving as a great springboard for young upcoming international talent.”
