27 June, 2024 – The 2024 Safaricom Great Arbaminch Run, organized by the Great Ethiopian Run, is set to take place on 14th July, 2024 in the picturesque city of Arbaminch. This event is poised to make a significant impact as “Ethiopia’s most environmental friendly race,” with a strong focus on sustainability and eco-conscious initiatives.

The 2024 Safaricom Great Arbaminch Run is dedicated to pioneering sustainable practices and environmental consciousness. A series of events leading up to the race day, including the “Green Saturday” activities on 13th July, will provide participants and supporters with the opportunity to engage in environmentally conscious initiatives. These include an early morning hike to visit the Dorze Village & Hizo Waterfall, tree planting to contribute to a greener Arbaminch, a community-wide town cleaning event, and a pre-race press conference focused on the event’s sustainability efforts. The day will culminate in a relaxing evening barbecue by the lake, offering a chance for participants to bond and celebrate their commitment to sustainability.

On Sunday, 14th July, participants will come together to take part in the 7KM run, as well as a Children’s run. The event promises to be a landmark in the push for environmentally sustainable races, with initiatives aimed at minimizing carbon emissions, reducing plastic and paper usage, and promoting responsible waste disposal and recycling.

The Great Ethiopian Run is committed to showcasing a green initiative by utilizing less plastic and paper, on the participant materials i.e all information flyers being digital. This dedication to sustainability sets as a way to move forward to the green initiative.

Safaricom, with its paperless registration platform through MPESA, is the title sponsor of the event while Pepsi, World Vision, GIZ, Top water and Haile resort also support the race and its initiative by being partners.
