Press Release – Tuesday 10 October 2023

The 2023 Sofi Malt Great Ethiopian Run International 10km will again act as a great vehicle for sport tourism for Ethiopia as hundreds of international travellers prepare to travel to Ethiopia to participate in the race.

This year the race will welcome runners from more than a dozen countries including India, Brazil, Kenya, Uganda, South Africa, Switzerland, Austria, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Ireland, UK and the USA.

The youngest international participant is 20-year old Mike Derrick from USA and the oldest is 72-year old Don Bradley from Manchester in the United Kingdom.

“This is a run for all ages and all backgrounds,” explained Operations Director Dagim Teshome. “With so many different nationalities coming to Ethiopia for the race, we want to put on a great spectacle that reflects the best of our running culture.”

The international participants include two Norwegian participants who are staff officers working for the United Nations in South Sudan, a British couple who are coming here as a surprise anniversary present and three participants from India, the first time that Indian nationals have travelled to Ethiopia for the race.

South Africa’s Elana Meyer will travel to Addis Ababa as VIP guest

Meanwhile, Great Ethiopian Run has also announced that one of South Africa’s most celebrated distance athletes Elana Meyer will come to the race as a VIP guest. Meyer is best remembered for her epic duel with Ethiopia’s Derartu Tulu in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics 10,000m where she won the silver medal behind Tulu.
