ADDIS ABABA MAY 5, 2019 Great Ethiopian Run (GER) and the European Union (EU) delegation to Ethiopia in collaboration celebrate the 2019 Europe Day through children races under the age category of 5, 8, 11 and 14
today at the Ethiopian Youth Sports Academy.
The children races were engaging, colorful, and full of fun and entertainment. The kids were also enjoyed the company of their peers and parents in a more like carnival atmosphere during the course of the races.
Creating the Platform
Great Ethiopian runt hosts this exclusively, Europe Day Children Race event for the 13th year in a row. Which made the event Ethiopia’s second children’s only race, next to GER’s flagship annual 10,000m event every
November. These races aim to create entertainment and promote healthy life-style through athletics in a country, were its majority population is, in fact the youth.
Cultural integration
The event also serves, as a means for the kids to learn about socialization with others, since the race is international, and the participants are coming from different backgrounds. Europe Day is celebrated in commemoration of the continent’s integrity and prosperity, every May 5 and 9 annually, since 1964 across the whole Europe. This children event is part of a variety of months-long cultural integration performances between Europe and Ethiopia.
Deputy Ambassador of the EU delegation to Ethiopia, Ms. Terry, said, “I feel so happy and impressed by the performance of the kids. We believe combining sport and culture, specially here in Ethiopia is a fantastic way to celebrate.” Meanwhile, Mr. Ermiyas Ayele, Race Director of GER said, “Since there are not much of these kind of kids events in our country, we are very happy to organize such types of events in collaboration with the European Union”, after the conclusion of this year’s event.
The winners of the races from all age groups were awarded different recreational packages at Haile Resort and Hotels, including their parents.
