Fantaye Belayneh of the Adidas Development Group running club equalled the course record in winning the Sofi Malt WOMEN FIRST 5km held in Addis Ababa earlier today.

Belayneh’s winning time of 15:19 saw her finish 6 seconds clear of Medhin Gebrselassie from the Bank Sport Club who had finished 2nd in the 2020 Total Great Ethiopian Run 10km two months ago. Gebrselassie improved her own best for the 5km distance by 28 seconds, from when she finished 6th in the same race twelve months ago. In third place was Fetaw Zerayrun, also representing the Bank Sport Club, in a time of 15:33.

The race was attended by several of Ethiopia’s famous athletes including Haile Gebrselassie, Meseret Defar, Aselefech Mergia and Senbere Teferi who last month won the Ethiopia National Half-Marathon Championships in Dire Dawa in a time of 1:10:52.

The Minister for Women, Children and Youth Filsan Abdullahi also attended the race and awarded prizes to the winners.

In other race categories Lidya Wondossen, Yordanos Abayne and Yayneabeba Aseged were the first three finishers in the Young Social Media Influencers category while Rahel Getachew, Etalem Gebre and Tigist Bachule were the first three in the SOFI Fitness Challenge.
