The Ethiopian Ministry of Tourism has announced plans to form a sister city partnership between two towns closely associated with the success of distance running in Ethiopia and Kenya.

Bokoji, the home town of Derartu TuluKenenisa Bekele and Tirunesh Dibaba as well as one of Ethiopia’s best-known coaches Sentayehu Eshetu, will form a partnership with Eldoret, home to Kenya’s distance running legend Eliud Kipchoge.

The partnership will be celebrated at an event being staged in Bokoji on the weekend of 14-15 May 2022, being staged by Great Ethiopian Run with support from the Ministry of Tourism. The event will comprise a 7km run, alongside a mountain bike event and a long-distance hike.

During the weekend’s event officials from the Ministry of Tourism will unveil a landmark in Bokoji with the designation “Bokoji – origin of world-class athletes”.
