12th March 2024- The 21th edition of the Safaricom Women First 5km is just 5 days away, scheduled for next Sunday, 17th March. This year’s event is anticipated to be the largest in its 20-year history, with an expected 16,000 participants, including approximately 75 foreign participants. The race will feature Participants in 5 different categories, in addition to a significant number of mass participants.
This year’s race message is “Invest in Women, Accelerate Progress”. The race also aims to achieve better results including new course records by involving a diverse range of athletes.

Notably, this year’s race will welcome about 35 participants from Ireland, who will also be celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. Additionally, over 40 participants from various countries and participants from Bokoji, the renowned land of runners, who are taking a training and education from a project called Girls got to Run, will join the race.
For the first time, the winner of the Icon Women category will receive a 50,000 ETB prize, with the opportunity to donate the winnings to an NGO of her choice. Various race categories, including the Mobility race, Ambassador race, and the 4-week training challenge, will offer diverse opportunities for participants to engage. And competition for the best T-shirt design will add a creative element to the event.
Ambassador Mesret Defar will present a special certificate award to all contestants who complete the race in under 35 minutes.
