9 February 2020 Hawassa – the 9 th edition of the Hawassa Half Marathon, in partnership with one of Ethiopia’s leading garment producers TAL Apparel as title sponsor was staged earlier today.
The half marathon event has a special place in the life of the city of Hawassa and creates a festival atmosphere: there are races for all the family, from the children’s races to the 7km run up to the half-marathon. There is also an elite half-marathon race with 20,000 birr for both men’s and women’s winners.
One of the missions of the Great Ethiopian Run is to encourage healthy living for citizens across Ethiopia. To that end, it started organising a weekly training programme for four weeks leading up to the race day which were undertaken by employees at the Hawassa Industrial Park as well as other local people in the city.
The title sponsor TAL Apparel made a big effort this year to encourage the participation of other partners for the betterment of the race. Some of these partners were showcasing their products and services at the race, including Sofi malt and Arki water. Haile Resort Hotel was the race HQ, hosting participants over race weekend and the pasta party dinner on the Saturday evening.
About Hawassa Half Marathon
Situated at a lower altitude than the capital Addis Ababa and surrounded by the beautiful Lake Hawassa, Hawassa has been the venue for the half-marathon race since 2010. The event has been popular among Addis Ababa residents as a weekend break with the family.
Results
The 2020 TAL Hawassa Half-marathon was held today in the beautiful city of Hawassa in different categories. In the 21k Elite Athlete races Gebre Roba won in the men’s category with a time of 01:02:44 while Demitu Hawass won in the women’s race with a time of 01:14:32. In the 7k Elite Athlete races Asnake Tilahun crossed the finish line to victory with 00:20:58 as his time. Sadiya Awol won in the women’s race while recording a time of 00:24:01. Biniam Fikadu defended his mass 21k title in the men’s race while a new champion was crowned in the women’s race, Berni Smith winning the title .
The race also included children’s races and also hosted mass 7k health runners.
