7 August 2012- A battling performance in the last 100m of the race gave Etihopian Sofia Assefa a historic bronze medal in the women’s 3000m steeplechase final at the 2012 London Olympic Games on Monday night.
The 24-year old, who had finished sixth in last year’s world championships in Daegu, bode her time behind the main challengers before outkicking Kenya’s African record holder Milcah Chemos for bronze in a time of 9:09.84 with victory going to Russian Yuliya Zaripova, ahead of Tunisian Habiba Ghribi.
