Among the various programs that the Anniversary seizes, hosting a colorful race event in five different regional cities, Hawassa, Mekele, Adama, Bahirdar, including Addis Ababa is planned to take place starting 17 December to 1 April, 2018.
Each Race will host a total of 3,000 regional participants and 7,500 in the case of Addis Ababa. The race will have five different types of races. Competition among the 75 years old elders’; Premium customers; branch managers and elite are expected to bring a Varity to the race event.
In addition the winner elite athletes from each region will get the chance to come to the final race to be held in Addis Ababa all costs
27 October – Great Ethiopian Run has announced that the cash prizes for the men’s and women’s winner of the elite athletes race has been doubled to 100,000 for this year’s races. In total the elite athlete prize purse will be around half a million birr, the biggest ever for a race in Ethiopia.
The increase in prize money is in line with one of the objectives of the Great Ethiopian Run 10km to create a platform for new athletes to emerge and have opportunity to compete on the international stage.
“We have come a long way in 16 years, and giving better rewards to the athletes has always figured highly in our plans,” commented Ermias Ayele, GM of Great Ethiopian Run. “We started with winners’ prizes of at 10,000. This year the winners will receive ten times that number.”
November 23 2017Over 40,000 participants are expected to take part in the 17th edition of the Great Ethiopian Run 10km which takes place in Meskel Square this Sunday. A wave start will again be in operation to accommodate these numbers, the biggest ever for a road race in Africa. The successful introduction of a wave start and a new course route on wider roads in last year’s race has led organisers to believe that numbers could even go beyond 50,000 in the coming years.
Over the past week scores of international participants from more than twenty countries have been arriving in Addis Ababa for the race. Among them is a big delegation from China, including members of the Chinese Athletics Federation and Beijing Marathon Organising Committee. Seventy-four participants from the Irish charity ORBIS are also taking part, as are several other European runners supporting charity work in Ethiopia.
