2 June 2017 – Registration for the 2017 TOTAL Great Ethiopian Run starts on Monday. Participants’ number is increased by 2,000 from last year raising total participants number to 44,000.
Race number with barcode will be given out with the official race t-shirt for each of the 44,000 participants which will be the new feature of the race in its 17th edition. In the past, only the elite athletes which are not more than 500 wear race number. Organizers explained introducing race number for all participants will help control illegal t-shirt production and take legal action. Registration fee has been increased to accommodate the rising cost of staging the event and introduction of the new race number system.
The wave start that was introduced last year has helped to increase participants number and a total of 7,000 places
7 May 2017 - Ethiopia celebrates Europe Day with Children Races. What better event is there in a country where athletics is the popular sport where its athletes have dominated long and middle distance race in the world since Rome Olympic in 1960 where Abebe Bikila of Ethiopia won the marathon race barefoot? This year is the 10th edition of EU Children Races where European Union in Ethiopia and Great Ethiopian Run partnered to celebrate the Europe Day. The races take place in four age categories (Under 5, 8, 11 and 14) where boys and girls compete separately. Haile Gebreselassie founder and Board Chairman of Great Ethiopian Run, Mrs. Terhi Lehtinen Deputy Ambassador of European Union and Hiruy Bahirtebeb Children Protection Directorate Director at MoWCA. HE Mr. Jozef Cibula Ambassador of Slovakia, HE Mrs. Mette Thygesen Ambassador of Denmark and Mr. Paul Evans Deputy Ambassador of Ireland were some of the guests invited by EU and started the different races and gave out prizes to the winners.
A total of over 2,000 participants were registered although the finishers’ number is less than that. The events takes place at the Ethiopian Youth Sport Academy and two of the Directors Woldegebriel Mezgebo and Fekadu Mekuria were also present and give out prizes towinners. EU Children races conclude the “Triple Crown”, the three events GER staged in three consecutive weeks. Last Sunday the EMA 5km race was staged in Addis Ababa in partnership with the Ethiopian Medical Association and two weeks ago the CCECC Hawassa Half Marathon was staged in Hawassa.
April 23 2017 Seada Kedir and Bira Seboka win the 2017 CCECC Hawassa Half Marathon in a time of 1.16.56 and 1.04.10 respectively. The 6th edition of the event that modified the previous three laps route to two bigger laps after two years where the majority of the dirt and coble stone roads are all now made into asphalt.
In the mass half marathon Yibeltal Biyalfew who was also winner in 2013 win again today finishing the race in a time of 1:30.32 while Jessica Anagnostaras finish ahead of the women finishing the half-marathon in a time of 1.35.23.
In 7 km race local athletes win the race and results will posted soon. A total of around two thousand participants took part in 7km mass race. The race also included 1.4 km children race where over 450 children take part.

April 30 2017 Gebeyanesh and Tsegaye win the second edition of the EMA race which includes an elite competition for first time this year. Ethiopian Medical Association (EMA) which celebrates its 53rd anniversary this year partnered with Great Ethiopian Run as part of its annual anniversary celebration which includes exhibition, seminars and panel discussion.

8 April 2017 – Dawit Fekadu and Degitu Azemeraw win the inaugural Great South Sudanese Run at a time of 29.14 and 33.45 respectively in Juba, Capital of South Sudan which is the youngest country in Africa. Fekadu who has run two fast 15km races few months ago has won a race Istanbul in a time 45.43 and he was 2nd at annual Sao-Paulo 15km in a time of 45.00 and finished the 2016 Great Ethiopian Run 10km International 4th place . Azemeraw is a very young and unknown athlete who surprised everyone when she beat famous and strong athletes at the annual Women First 5km women only run four weeks ago in Addis Ababa. She is coached by Tedy who is husband of Olympic Gold medalist Mesert Defar.
The inaugural race which is organized by great Ethiopian Run and Dembesh Hotel with the support South Sudanese Government under the slogan “Fund raising to fight famine and poverty” is a huge success where HE Salva Kiir Maradyt President of the Republic of South Sudan jogged 120m along with his cabinet of minister before signing of 5,000 participants at Dr. John Garang Mausoleum (Freedom Square).
