18 March 2017 - Great Ethiopian Run in addition to its flagship 10k International race organizes a number of annual races in Addis Ababa and different regions in Ethiopia. The race in Hawassa has been the only annual regional event it organizes outside of Addis Ababa.
Hawassa Half Marathon will take place on 23 April 2017 and in addition to the half-marathon it will also have 7km and children races. It’s the 6th edition of the event where it took place from 2010-2014 for five years and was interrupted for two years. Today the Great Ethiopian Run has signed a three year Memorandum of Understanding with the Hawassa City Administration in the presence of Mayor of Hawassa HE Tewodrow Gebiba who commented “we want to promote our city and support tourism and we are confident our partnership with Great Ethiopian Run will help us to do that”
The title sponsor of this event is CCECC Ethiopia Construction PLC. CCECC is the company that undertakes the construction of the Hawassa Industrial Park. The Hawassa Industrial Park has started operation and CCECC is managing the operation. The company is also constructing the other industrial park in Combolcha, Adama and Diredawa.
Great Ethiopian Run has already started promotion of the event in Addis Ababa and had registered over hundred participants from Addis Ababa and 21 participants from outside Ethiopia. In the past editions Great Ethiopian Run has mobilized around 800 participants from Addis Ababa.
This annual race will also help athletes at the region to show their positional. To facilitate this Great Ethiopian Run will work closer in collaboration with the region’s athletics federation. The federation will provide technical support and oversee the participation of the regional athletes.
Registration in Hawassa will start on 3 April 2017. The following five location will used for registration: Hawassa city Municipality, Atote Café, Haile Resort, ; Gebrekirstos Hotel and Alliance Building.
In addition to CCECC, Coca Cola, Arki Water, Haile Resort and Volcafe are the other sponsors of the event.
